BREAKING: Apartment Fire In Council Bluffs, People Evacuated

COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM) - Some residents at an apartment complex in Council Bluffs were left without coats, belongings, pets and homes after a fire started Friday night.

FOX 42 News has learned of a fire at Greenbriar Apartments near Valley View Park on Franklin Avenue.

Authorities tell us it happened around 8 p.m. and that there were some evacuations.

Russ Root told reporter Leah Uko that he was watching the NCAA games when he saw smoke.

"I opened up the door and I noticed some fire was generating underneath the balcony," Root continued to describe what he saw. "And I went in to get a glass of water to put it out and the whole apartment started to fill up with smoke within a minute or two."

Roots unit was destroyed. He said he had enough time to grab his guitar before he got out safely.

"It seems too surreal right now, but I'm having an emotional--I'm balling one minute."
