      Coffee May Reduce Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

      OMAHA (KPTM)- Good news for coffee drinkers, new researchhas found that people who drink multiple cups of coffee a day are at a lowerrisk for type 2 diabetes.

      "Caffeinated products or decaffeinate products have beenassociated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Vijay Shivaswamy.

      In a study conducted by the Harvard School of Publicmedicine, researchers found that drinking six cups of coffee a day can reducethe risk of getting type 2 diabetes by two percent.

      The research looked at more than a dozen different studies,and found that those people who drink one cup of coffee a day reduce the riskof getting type 2 diabetes by eight percent.

      Shivaswamy warns that this shouldn't mean people need tostart drinking multiple cups a day and that the best way to combat type 2diabetes is through diet and exercise.

      "Modest weight loss of up to 7 percent of your currentbody weight by regular physical activity and a diet that is low in fat andcalories can uh in fact cut your risk of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent," saidShivaswamy.
