Dog Rescue Needs Help for Upcoming Winter

GLENWOOD, IOWA (KPTM)- It's something people don't often want to think about, winter.

Animals are some of the first to suffer when winter weatherhits, especially if they are left outside without any sort of shelter.

"We had a case in Iowa not too long ago where a SaintBernard froze to death," said Genea Stoops.

"St. Bernards are sturdy dogs, they're big dogs.. But whenit's cold they need shelter, and they need food, and they need water," saidStoops. "It's heart breaking, It'sreally heartbreaking."

It's a love of animals that has inspired Stoops to rescuedozens of dogs and horses for years at her 'Hooves And Paws Rescue of theHeartland' in Glenwood, Iowa.

"We can only save what we can save," said Stoops.

With colder temperatures creeping closer, Stoops said she isstarting her 'Dog Shelter Drive' earlier than ever.

"It's going to be a cold hard winter," said Stoops.

Stoops is asking for donations of dog houses in goodcondition, heated water bowls, extension chords, and straw for the dog houses.

She said she will store the shelters, and deliver and set upwhen needed during the cold months.

"We don't know the circumstances why the dogs are left andthere is no good reason. There's just never any good reason," said Stoops.

If your dog is outside all winter, Stoops recommends havingan enclosed shelter and straw for the dog to stay warm. Stoops said to makesure to continually check water bowls to make sure water hasn't frozenover. She also said to make sure yourpet gets plenty of food to stay warm.

"We don't know the circumstances why the dogs are left andthere is no good reason. There's just never any good reason," said Stoops.
