OMAHA(KPTM)- Figure skaters from around the region braved the cold to compete on the ice. Nearly 200 competitors from beginners to advanced skaters participated in the 33rd annual Winter Festival at Omaha's Hitchcock Park which ran from Thursday through Sunday.
"This is one of the biggest skating events in the region that we are able to compete in," said Jeff Dickinson who serves as co-chair of the Winter Festival, and also is a parent of a competitive figure skater.
Dickinson adds the event attracted skaters from surrounding states as well. And it's something he's hoping to see more of. "It (our figure skating community) isn't as big as Colorado or Missouri or the Kansas City area in terms of the skaters we have but we are trying to build up the number we have here," said Dickinson who adds that he thinks having big events locally, like the Nationals held at the CenturyLink Center last year are a step in the right direction.
Dickinson says this year's Winter Festival had more than a dozen more competitors than last year's event.
