SPRINGFIELD (KPTM) - A house is destroyed by a fire while the homeowner was building homes in Haiti.

Desiree Hayes could see the fire as she left work in Millard.

"I just hope this doesn't happen to anyone else, its terrible, its not even my home and its devastating," she said.

Her brother, Eric Hayes, was on a mission trip in Haiti. Little did he know his house near 6th and Spruce was destroyed by fire Thursday morning.

The fire started around 10 a.m. and by 4 o'clock firefighters were still fighting below zero wind chills putting out the flames.

Eric Hayes has been going with Faith Missions International to Haiti for the last 16 years. A group from the organization is helping build homes for kids who are aging out of orphanages.

Hayes' daughter was adopted from Haiti as well.

"She moved here, had nothing, she went down there to see her home country and she is coming back with nothing again so, for her she is going to be more devastated than her dad," Desiree Hayes said.

No one was injured in the fire. The house also had a tenant; the American Red Cross was assisting her. The Red Cross was also helping the firefighters who were battling the fire.
