I-80 In Council Bluffs Closed, Again, Due To Construction
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (KPTM)- Thousands of drivers were stuck in traffic Monday night into Tuesday morning. The culprit was another construction challenge. Crews were installing drainage pipes underneath the interstate near the 24th street exit in Council Bluffs when heavy rain caused the dirt to loosen. "Some of the material which is a fine sandy material was beginning to wash away," said David Dorsett, Iowa Department of Transportation Engineer. It weakened the dirt under I-80 causing crews to tear up the concrete, dig holes and fill it back in.As a result the interstate was closed for fifteen hours. The construction project is part of a larger, $1 billion endeavor that will encompass Highway 192, Interstate 29 and Interstate 80. It is expected to be completed in 12 years.
