OMAHA (KTPM) - Friends of Omaha's latest homicide victim, 22-year-old Derek Huntley, spoke out not because they wanted to; but because he "would have wanted them to".

Huntley was shot Saturday around 2:30 p.m. He died later at the hospital. More than 48 hours later, police still have not released any more information.

Huntley's best friend, Dejon Martin spoke exclusively with KPTM Monday.

"I can't sleep. I can't really even eat. All I want to do is just--I want to be there," Martin said. "Talking to him while he's sitting right next to me."

Martin cannot stop shaking when reality sets in that his best friend of 10 years is dead.

"I was doing something to get my life back together and at the same time he was helping me. He was guiding me."

Martin said Huntley drove himself to the hospital when he was shot through his right shoulder. Huntley died before Martin, other friends and family got to the hospital.

"If it was that was in that position," friend Jordan Torres said. "I know he'd do anything in his power to find out who it was."

Police have not called Huntley's death a murder; but friends and family close to Huntley said it was. They said someone broke into his home.

Right now concrete answers are still unclear. What friends said they do know--Derek Huntley did not deserve to die young.

"He always took care of his family," Martin said. "He always took care of his kid."

Police are investigating this case.
