Revitalizing Crossroads Area Means Big Business
OMAHA (KPTM)- The glory days of the Crossroads Mall could be on their way back. A major revitalization project is underway. The mall will be demolished and rebuilt as an outdoor shopping area similar to Shadow Lake and Village Pointe.
"Any time you see offices and buildings that are closed and boarded up and have weeds in the parking lot, that neighborhood is probably tired and needs a do-over," Jim Darmody said.
Darmody is the owner of several McDonald's restaurants in Omaha, including the one on 77th and Dodge near Crossroads Mall. He bought into the rebirth of the area. He spent about $1 million reconstructing his business.
"I was aware of the new plan down the road for this area and I'm glad to be a part of it and to be ahead of it," Darmody said.
Many of the mall's tenants have left. Business owners said crime was a major factor but that gang activity has slowed down in the area.
"It's making it a better neighborhood and it gives people a reason to invest money to make it a thriving area again," said Darmody.
The City of Omaha's Planning Department reports the project should be completed in the spring of 2015.
