OMAHA/COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM) - Firefighters had another busy Sunday afternoon fighting grass fires that quickly spread because of dry conditions and heavy wind.
The first spread near a farm in Southwest Omaha. Firefighters got that quickly under control without it damaging any buildings or injuring anyone.
About thirty minutes later, Council Bluffs firefighters were called to a large grass fire on Ashley lane in the far east side of the city.
Residents there had to use their own water hoses to keep the flames from spreading to their houses. They also watered down playground equipment in their backyards. After firefighters got that fire out, an eerie scene of charred, blackened grass surrounding untouched playground equipment remained.
It's the second Sunday in about a month that fire crews from all over the Omaha and Council Bluffs area had to deal with large fires spreading quickly because of wind and dry conditions.
