Victim of Beating Faces Accused Attacker in Court

COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM) - It doesn't happen often.

A man on trial accused of a violent beating acted as his own lawyer Thursday in a Council Bluffs courtroom. For Brian Bey, he was trying to prove on his own that his accuser is a liar.

"Tabitha, have you ever been convicted of false statements?" Bey asked.

Prosecutors, however, believe a bag full of evidence links Bey to the severe beating of Tabitha Proplesch, 30, last May near Crescent, Iowa.

"Is the individual that did that seated to the right of me?" asked one prosecutor. "Yes," responded Proplesch.

Proplesch claims Bey first attacked her outside of an Omaha apartment building before bolting across the state line in a pickup truck.

"I was put on the ground. That's when my head was split open, then I was suffocated, passed out and I remember I woke up in the back of a vehicle," recalled Proplesch.

Proplesch later said to police Bey told her he was going to kill her.

More testimony is expected Friday.
