November Jefferson Award Winner: Marie Lutz

Marie Lutz is our Jefferson Awards winner for November

Marie Lutz isn’t your typical 90-year-old woman.

"I didn't feel like I wanted to slow down. I wanted to keep going and keep doing,” Lutz said.

That’s what she told herself after she retired over 30 years ago.

"I wanted something to do. I didn't want to sit and look at four walls."

It’s something she continues to tell herself even now after years of volunteering at the Ashland food pantry.

"Nineteen-eighty-five is when I've been doing it."

She has been volunteering for decades.

"We stock it and then we hand it out. We shop for the groceries. We stock it and then we hand it out."

"I'm a people person. I like to be with people and around people and visit and stuff,” Lutz says.

And she says she helps them through tough times.

"They need it because most of them have little children and they've either had major surgery, they've lost a job or something has come up that they don't have food."

"Sometimes I help three families in one day."

Those families appreciate all that Lutz is doing for them.

"They give me hugs and they've got tears coming down their eyes."
