A 3-year-old boy is alert and in stable condition after nearly drowning Thursday evening.

At 4:30 p.m., Bellevue police and fire and rescue responded to a call of a possible drowning at a small pond located in the area near the 8600 block of South 45th Avenue.

Police say the boy was at home with both parents and was playing outside in the fenced backyard.

The child’s father noticed him missing from the yard and he went to look for him, police say.

The father found his son lying face down in the pond approximately 60 to 80 yards away from their home.

When officers arrived, police say the boy was unconscious but was breathing.

He was then taken to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha.

The identity of the child and the family is not being released at this time.
