Aksarben citizen patrol looking to add more people to fight crime

OMAHA,NE(FOX42KPTM)-Mike Heilig decided to start a citizen's patrol group last year to fight crime in the Aksarben Elmwood Park area.

"I was reading on there people having stuff broken into and having problems with crime," says Heilig.

"I just wrote something, what about a citizens patrol and people said yea yea lets do it."

He got the ball rolling with the Omaha Coalition of Citizen Patrol.

"I have one person, besides myself and I'm working with two others."

Together they keep an eye on Aksarben, especially around Elmwood Park. Heilig's mission is to make sure the crooks know the neighborhood is protected.

"We see most of these crimes are happening at night."

That's why he says more neighborhoods should get on board.

"Drive along real slow and get the windows down."

Heilig says his crew is trained to watch out for anything suspicious.

"We carry big flashlights so we can look up in the houses."

"I'm going to stay after this citizens patrol thing, I'm not going to fade away," says Heilig.

He says groups like the citizen's patrol is something needed all across Omaha.
