Bond set at $1M for serial sex offender Zachary Person

UPDATE: Zachary Person's hearing was March 7.

He is facing sexual assault charges, and his bond is $1,000,000.

OMAHA, Ne (FOX42KPTM) -- A man with a history of sexually assaulting women appears to have done it again, and this time, the attack was caught on camera at an Omaha hotel.

Surveillance footage shows a man stalking a hotel worker before grabbing her and trying to force her into a bathroom.

Thanks to some quick thinking she unmasks her attacker and he takes off.

Investigators say a similar incident later in the day helped track him down.

It all started at the Home2 Suites hotel early Wednesday morning.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the man who is responsible is listed on the sex offender registry and is wanted in multiple states for similar crimes.

On Wednesday morning, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Zachary Person came into the Home2 Suites hotel in West Omaha.

A woman who works there was the only one around.

Surveillance footage shows Person walking back and forth between the front desk before waiting in an empty hallway for the woman to come out of her office.

When she does, Person grabs her, drags her into the hallway and gropes her.

Later on, the footage shows that Person's ski mask is off. That's when he runs out of the hotel, but he's not gone for long.

He comes right back through the front door to get his mask. After chasing the woman, he grabs the mask from her and then runs out of the hotel once again.

DCSO Lt. William Rinn said, “Had she not been the strong person that she was and decided that she was not going to be a victim, and actually fought this individual off – she's the one who revealed his identity.”

The sheriff's office sent pictures of Person to several law enforcement agencies, but workers say it was information from Sioux City police that also helped them catch Person.

Police believe Person is the same man who was watching women showering at Morningside College on Wednesday morning.

Investigators say he's been good at hiding his identity for a long time, so for him to be caught on camera was a shock for him and a great break in the case.

Person was arrested at his mother's home in Norfolk Friday morning and remains in jail.

FOX 42 spoke with the manager of Home2 Suites to ask if the hotel is stepping up security in any way. The manager says since this is an ongoing investigation she could not say anything.

Person is registered as a sex offender in Nebraska.

He's been convicted of two previous sexual assaults in the state.

Person is waiting to be sentenced for another sexual assault case in South Dakota.
