City clarifies, replaces confusing sign at Elmwood Park

“[The sign] was geared for just the grotto, not for the rest of the park,” City of Omaha Parks & Recreation Director Brook Bench said.

A sign at Elmwood Park has been causing confusion for many.

“The first thing you see when you come into this park isa sign that says ‘no skateboarding, rollerblading or bicycle riding,’" said Mark Welsch, who lives near the park. "Some people would think it's for the grotto or the for the park."

Other neighbors say the sign is unclear.

“It's sort of discerning,” Welsch said. "Where are we supposed to do these activities now?”

FOX 42 called the city to find out the sign’s purpose.

City of Omaha Parks & Recreation Director Brook Bench said, "We've had skateboarders that have been going through there damaging that."

Bench says it costs a lot of money to maintain the area known as the grotto.

“[The sign] was geared for just the grotto, not for the rest of the park,” Bench said. "They thought we were closing the park down for biking, that's not the case. It was the only sign the foreman had and we wanted to put something up.”

To stop confusion, the sign was taken down Tuesday afternoon

Bench said, “It's very important for us to keep it nice and not let it get vandalized and skateboarding in the grotto don't mix.”

The city says it plans to put up a new sign Wednesday that says "no skateboarding."
