Council Bluffs bar opens its doors months after fire nearly burns it down

A popular restaurant is now back open after three months of being closed.

It nearly burned down in January, but a Council Bluffs family never gave up.

"This is my livelihood," Brian Cadwallader said. "We do a lot of business out of this restaurant, so I had to get it back."

He says it was a long and stressful few months.

"We opened on April 6," he said. "We had a fire on January 6 that basically destroyed the building."

The damage to the kitchen from an overnight fire forced The Salty Dog Bar & Grill in Council Bluffs to close its doors.

"It was devastating," Shaye Wynn said. "It's something I never want to experience again."

Cadwallader said, "I've never had anything like it in my life. It's just the uncertainty of how it's all going to go."

The staff members had to work somewhere else.

Wynn says she felt the immense responsibility to quickly get the place open again.

"Knowing that someone might be more stressed out about money and not having a job was more stressful," she said.

Now, the doors are finally open in half the time they expected.

Cadwallader said, "We've oiled all the gears and everything's operating as it should, and we're ready to tell everyone we're open for business and ready to have them back."

While orders are placed and the pool table is full; they say now it's the good kind of busy.

"Had we not all stuck it out we'd still be a long ways from completed," Cadwallader said.

This was the first time the Salty Dog Bar & Grill shut its doors since it opened in 2009.

Owners say they believe it was an electrical fire.
