Crews work to fix water main break in the bitter cold
OMAHA,NE(FOX42KPTM)-Utility workers spent hours trying to fix the water main break near 46th and Farnam Streets. They say it was due to cold weather. A section of Farnam was shut down. Workers say although it was cold, they had to work against it.
"You get use to it," Mark Reier said. He works for Metropolitan Utilities District.
It was a six inch water main break. However, crews say they're prepared for days like this.
"You learn over time what clothes to wear, a lot of layers."
They even have a method to help them stay warm.
"We take turns shifting, and sit in the truck to warm up," Reier said.
He says they're so concerned with fixing the leak that being in the bitter cold becomes secondary.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor:
-Drink warm fluids at all times
-Keep extra clothing handy
-Monitor your physical condition and that of your coworkers
