Family members mourn the death of 21-year-old Xavier Bass
OMAHA,Neb(FOX42KPTM)-Omaha police are now investigating the shooting death of 21-year-old Xavier Bass.
Monday night, a prayer walk was held in honor of Bass. Dozens of people were there to show their support and share memories of Bass.
"Xavier meant a lot to us, he was our family," Tona Nelson said. She's Bass' cousin.
"He was a good person who believed in his family and we believed in him," she said.
It all happened Sunday afternoon on Highway 75 near the Hamilton street exit.
Police say bullets from a truck struck an SUV.
Inside that SUV, were Bass and 24-year-old Marcus Eiland. Eiland survived, but Bass did not.
"You see it, you read about it, you hear about it happening to so many families and it affects other families but now it hits home," Andre McGraw said. He's Bass' uncle. He says years ago, Bass lost his father to gun violence as well.
"He was so young, roughly two months old, just knowing his mom always kept memories of his father and who his father is was important," he said.
The Bass family just celebrated his birthday and now their mourning his death.
"Help us, we need some type of closure in this so we can rest at night," Nelson said.
Omaha police say they've noticed a spike in crime, but not as much as the previous years. They say they're assigning more officers on duty to address the crime. However, they say road rage was not a factor in this case.
Officials are still looking for the person who may have been involved in the shooting. The vehicle is described as a mid-90s Chevy Suburban or Tahoe with running boards and an aftermarket paint job. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP.
