Family owned glass repair shop fields almost 1,000 calls after storm

At Steven and Virginia Kahl's auto glass repair shop the phone's been ringing off the hook.

So much that the family decided to skip its vacation to stay on top of the 900+ calls that have come in.

"I've been doing glass since 1986 and this is the worse storm I have ever seen," said Steven Kahl, the owner of ABC Auto Glass in Omaha.

The hail stones hit Thursday night, causing big dents and shattered glass.

"I battled cancer in 2014 and it took a toll on our business," said Virginia Kahl. "Granted the hail storm was awful and horrible for people, but in turn, it's helping my family with our medical bills."

It takes some glue, a wipe to the new window, and years of experience to get the glass fixed.

This mom and pop shop's been able to crank them out fast.

Some bigger shops don't have appointments available until mid July.

"Most of them you can generally have done within an hour to two hours windshield," said Steven Kahl. "Back windows take longer."

He said they take longer because of the clean-up because 2,000 small pieces of glass could come from a back window.

"Bottom line is we're here, we care," said Kahl. "It's not just a job for us. It's our life."
