First responders break ground on public safety plaza in Council Bluffs

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Ia (FOX42KPTM) - First responders gathered in Council Bluffs Monday morning for a special groundbreaking. A new public safety plaza is in the works and will one day feature four statues that will represent four different public safety departments.

The groundbreaking took place on West Broadway between Main and Pearl Streets. On hand for the ceremony were the Council Bluffs Fire Department, highway patrol, police department, sheriff's office and 911 call center.

The project is being funded by Ron and Suzanne Mahoney. They are Council Bluffs natives and donated more than $300,000 to the project.

John Lajba, the sculptor, is currently creating the statues and expects them to be installed by the end of September.
