Garbage man pinned between cars, driver says sun was in eyes

An employee with Red River Waste Solutions was hit while working Thursday morning

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (FOX 42 KPTM)-- Council Bluffs police say a garbage truck worker is in the hospital and seriously hurt after getting pinned between his truck and another car Thursday morning. They say the driver said the sun was in her eyes.

Just before 7:30, police say Mario Rodrigues was emptying garbage into the truck on Avenue G off of 38th. He's an employee with Red River Waste Solutions.

They say Chantel Wachner slammed into him from behind.

Officers say she told them she was in the process of putting her sun visor down when she crashed into Rodrigues and did not see the truck at all. Officers say the truck's lights were flashing and Rodrigues was wearing his reflective vest.

He was pinned in between the two cars until medics could get there.

He was sent to the UNMC trauma center, but officers say he is expected to live.

Wachner was ticketed for failing to maintain distance.
