Hydrogen leak in main plant area at Cooper Nuclear Station
AUBURN, Neb (FOX 42 KPTM)-- The Nebraska Public Power District is looking to what it's calling an "unusual event" at its Cooper Nuclear Station Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say hydrogen is leaking into a main area of the plant, but say the leak isn’t in the power plant’s nuclear systems, and it doesn’t represent a safety threat.
The hydrogen is used to help cool the turbine.
The utility officially declared the notice just before 11:20 a.m.
A maintenance crew worker discovered the leak. Crews are working on repairing the leak.
Officials say the plant is stable and still in operation. They say there is no threat to the public right now.
Cooper Nuclear Station is located three miles southeast of Brownville near the Missouri River.
