Local event gets girls interested in technology, coding

In an effort to foster an interest in technology and computer coding in young women, Hayneedle hosted its first Girls who Code event.

Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, but women make up less than 25 percent of the workforce.

In an effort to foster an interest in technology and computer coding in young women, Hayneedle hosted its first Girls who Code event.

It wants to inspire young women by sharing examples, stories and experiences of women that are currently holding a coding or tech job.

"It's definitely something I'm interested in especially now after meeting these women," said Abby Laplant, who attended. "Maybe I have a future in this, maybe I don't, but either way, I got to meet some inspiring women."

Around 60 girls from six area high schools attended this year's event.
