Flames and smoke fill West Omaha sky after apartment building catches fire

UPDATE: Fire officials say the fire was in the attic of one apartment building.

It took about 40 firefighters to put it out. No one was reported injured.

OMAHA -- A massive apartment fire has forced several people from their homes.

The fire broke out around 7:00 p.m. Thursday night at The Vanderbilt Apartments located near 111th and West Blondo.

Video sent to FOX 42 showed flames and smoke could be seen for miles.

Firefighters said the fire began in the attic and quickly spread throughout one of the buildings in the complex.

At this point, firefighters said it doesn't appear anyone was hurt. But one dog did suffer smoke inhalation.

Neighbors from a nearby apartment complex rushed over to help and are offering whatever assistance may be needed.

The Salvation Army is also helping everyone affected.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
