Navy to Commission Littoral Combat Ship Omaha
The new combat ship for the navy that will soon bear Omaha's name is in port and ready for a celebration.
The ship will officially be commissioned the U.S. Omaha this Saturday in San Diego at noon, our time.
It's the eleventh littoral combat ship to go into the fleet and the fourth warship named for Omaha.
The first was a sloop of war, the second a light cruiser, and the third an attack submarine.
Former Nebraska Gov. Bob Kerry will give the address and Susie Buffet will serve as the ship's sponsor.
The ceremony can be viewed on the Navy Live blog at http://navylive.dodlive.mil.
