Nebraska Army National Guard soldiers honored at welcome home ceremony
OMAHA,Neb(FOX42KPTM)-A "Welcome Home" ceremony was held for the Nebraska Army National Guard Sunday afternoon at the Hilton Hotel.
"We want him home with us," Sherri Maberry said. Mayberry's husband and 49 soldiers returned from a deployment to Guantanamo Bay.
"It's just really nice to have that second person be like, "Hey can you pick up the kids?"
The ceremony was a time to celebrate reflect.
"You miss that baseball game, or that dance recital, that holiday party, we appreciate the sacrifice and the time that you have made away from your family to secure our freedom," Governor Pete Ricketts said.
"Life doesn't stop at home, kids still do sports, school is still going on and even though I was missing my family immensely, it was hard to connect in that aspect," Eric Hunsberger mentioned. He was deployed along with Maberry's husband.
"Being deployed a few times, we are kind of prepared for that," Hunsberger said.
Those with the National Guard say they're always ready to leave if needed. However, sometimes they will only get a week's notice before deployment.
