Omaha students learn the dangers of not wearing seat belts
OMAHA,Neb(FOX42KPTM)-Several Omaha students were able to get a first look of what could happen if you don't wear a seat belt while driving.
Instructors at Cornhusker Driving School set up a mock crash. A dummy is placed in the driver's seat without a seat belt. After the car rolls over multiple times, the dummy will fly out the window and hit the ground.
"People tell you that but until you actually see it happen and see what it is and what it isn't with the real life demonstration, you don't really think about it," Portia Lenczowski said. She was a student during the Sunday's session.
The goal is for them to actually see what they've learned in the classroom.
"It's truly like being in a rollover and being ejected from the vehicle," Anna Venditte said. She's one of the instructors. "It's good for them, it hits home."
Students also reviewed what you shouldn't do while behind the wheel.
"Alcohol, marijuana, even your phone can influence the way you drive and affect other drivers too. If you're on your phone, it may not affect you but it can affect someone in the lane next to you.," Mia Sharrar said. This is the first time she's ever seen the demonstration.
There's also a special trick they all learned on Sunday. For cars 2000's and up, if you're locked inside a trunk, you can pull the green latch to help you get out.
"I never knew it was there," Lenczowski said.
Venditte says being behind the wheel is a big responsibility and requires your full attention.
Cornhusker Driving School has been invited to demonstrate its "Seat Belt Persuader" at the National Driver Association Convention with over 1,000 members in July in Rosemont, Illinois.
