OMAHA, Ne (FOX42KPTM) - The Omaha Public Power District has sent crews to Florida to help restore power after Hurricane Irma battered the area.

According to OPPD, 15 workers and 32 contracted tree trimmers met up in Rockport, Missouri Tuesday morning to head south as a group. The 21-hour trip is the furthest OPPD has sent crews in mutual aid support.

"The damage caused by this hurricane is catastrophic," said Mo Doghman, Vice President-Energy and Chief Compliance Officer for OPPD. "The impacted utilities need all the help they can get right now."

Doghman also said the power district is glad to lend people and their talents to help with the big recovery effort.
