The Latest: Student, driver killed in Iowa school bus fire

OAKLAND, Iowa (AP) — The Latest on a fatal school bus fire in western Iowa (all times local):

10:15 a.m.

Authorities say a fire aboard an Iowa school bus has killed a student and the bus driver.

Investigators say no one else was on the bus when the fire erupted around 7 a.m. Tuesday southeast of Oakland, which is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Omaha, Nebraska.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Lt. Rob Ambrose says the remains of the driver and a student were found after the fire was extinguished. The ages and names of the victims weren’t immediately released.

Ambrose says no one else was on the bus at the time.

The bus caught fire after it backed out of a farm driveway and into a ditch across the road. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The bus was from the Riverside Community School District.

Investigators say there may have been as many as 20 students on the bus when the fire erupted around 7 a.m. Tuesday. The bus was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The ages and identities of the victims weren’t immediately released.

The bus was from the Riverside Community School District. It caught fire southeast of Oakland, which is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Omaha, Nebraska.

Pottawattamie County Chief Deputy Sheriff John Reynolds tells the Omaha World Herald the remains of two people were found after the fire was extinguished.

POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa (FOX 42 KPTM)-- Investigators in Pottawattamie County say they found two people's bodies inside a Riverside Community School bus that had caught on fire Tuesday morning.

Deputies received a call around 7 saying the bus was on fire near 480th street just southeast of Oakland.

More people called in saying there were people who did not make it out of the bus.

The bus was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters from Oakland and Carson got there.

Rescuers found the bodies inside the bus once they managed to get the flames under control.
