UNO fans head to basketball tournament by bus
OMAHA, Ne (FOX42KPTM) - Even before leaving campus, UNO fans on a packed bus Tuesday showed their school spirit loud and proud.
"It's invigorating," said Brad Collett, a UNO junior. "It's amazing to be a part of that energy and that crowd."
Collett was one of about 55 passengers on board with a destination to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to watch Nebraska-Omaha's basketball team play in its conference tournament. At stake was a ticket to the NCAA tournament next week.
"You just can't help but get involved and get emotionally involved with that," said Collett.
For the fans, this trip is especially meaningful because the team has never made it this far before.
"It's not just Creighton and UNL anymore. UNO is up there as well," said Bill Pickett, the trip's organizer. "This is by far one of the most exciting times since we made it to the Frozen Four in hockey."
He says the turnout is proof UNO basketball is sparking a lot of interest.
"I think it really shows Omaha and our students that UNO is a powerhouse as well and we're here and we're going to bring it at the games," said Pickett.
If the Mavericks win and advance to the NCAA tournament Tuesday night, the fans told FOX 42 News it would be quite the accomplishment. This is only Nebraska-Omaha's second year of full eligibility at the Division I level.
