UPDATE: The 2-year-old girl who was in critical condition after an apartment fire Wednesday has died, officials said Friday.
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (FOX42KPTM) — City officials have identified the two people who were injured in a Wednesday morning fire at a Council Bluffs apartment complex.
Michelle Patton, 37, and a 2-year-old girl are currently in critical condition.
Council Bluffs fire crews were called to an apartment complex near 1st and Harrison streets for a report of smoke coming from a building.
A Council Bluffs police officer was the first to arrive and reported that smoke was coming from the back of the building.
Shortly after crews began putting out the fire, a search and rescue crew reported that there were two people in a bedroom in the apartment.
The woman and toddler were both unresponsive and without a pulse. They were taken to on-scene medics, who immediately initiated CPR.
Patton eventually regained a pulse and was taken to CHI Mercy Hospital along with the 2-year-old girl.
Patton was later transferred to the Nebraska Medical Center, and the toddler was transferred to Children’s Hospital.
Both victims lived at the apartment complex.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
