WWII Vet's remains finally brought home 73 years later
OMAHA -- The remains of a World War II soldier from the metro are now home.
Sergeant Byron Nelson was a member of the 721st bomb squadron
His plane was attacked in Italy and went down.
His remains were buried there in 1944, but new technology and DNA evidence helped identify Nelson's remains.
Members of the Patriot Guard escorted the soldier from Omaha to his hometown of Primghar, Iowa.
"A lot of us are Vietnam War vets, and some of us did not receive such a good welcome home. Both the heroes that lost their lives as well as those of us that served. So we pretty well vowed that that's not going to happen again," said Jack Kenkel.
Sergeant Nelson's remains are set to be buried this Saturday.
