Caught on camera: thief swipes wallet from woman's purse
OMAHA, Ne (FOX42KPTM) —
We're always told to keep an eye on our purses and wallets, and an Omaha woman is learning that lesson the hard way.
She says a crook swiped her wallet while she was shopping. However, there is some good news: the whole incident was caught on camera.
Surveillance video shows a woman opening up a purse from someone else's cart. She grabs the wallet from the purse and then walks away.
"It's just inconvenient. You feel violated and you're hurt that you think people do that,” said Ashley Way, the owner of the wallet that was stolen. She was shopping at a Whole Foods in Omaha when the theft happened.
Way said, "My back was maybe turned for a split second, a few seconds maybe and it was gone."
The thief got away with the wallet and everything inside it: gift cards, cash, Way’s driver's license, and her credit and debit cards. They are all items she now has to replace.
"You have to jump through hoops to be able to get access to your accounts. It's really difficult."
Way says the woman who stole her wallet didn't waste any time. Over $5,000 worth of stuff was charged to her cards.
Way said, "I cried. I've just cried so much about it."
Now she wants to prevent the same thing from happening to others.
Way said, "People are out there to do harm and you just have to make sure you're paying attention 24/7.”
Way says she will have to dispute the charges on her debit card, so there's no guarantee she'll get that money back.
Way says next time she's out shopping she won't be leaving her purse in her cart. Instead, she says plans on wearing it to keep her wallet safe.
