Ban The Box: Nebraska Removes Criminal History Questions From Job Apps

Melina MatthesOMAHA (KPTM) - The State of Nebraska became the 11th state in the country last week to remove questions about an applicant's criminal record from employment applications; a big victory for one man who hopes it will give others the second chance he'd been fighting for."When I'd apply for a job, I would pretty much get denied," said Bryan Riley, who's had trouble landing a job after finding himself on the other side of the law when he was 15 years old.When Riley got out of jail, he says he had hoped people would forgive and forget, but they didn't."I was trying to make an honest living, but my conviction stopped me from doing that."Now that the law known as Ban The Box is going into effect in July, Riley is hopeful it will make a difference in the lives of others.The law, however, is not aimed at tweaking the applications of school and law enforcement agencies. People will still have to disclose their criminal background for those jobs.
