A set of four-legged volunteers made an appearance Tuesday at five CHI Health hospitals in the metro.

These lovable canines were brought in to provide a little distraction from the anxiety patients can experience with a trip to the hospital.

Studies have shown that interacting with animals increases a hormone that helps make us feel happier.

"People are healthier with pets in their lives," said mental health therapist Karen Williams, "so bringing them into a hospital or home setting where someone is struggling with an illness it can really be beneficial for them."

Experts say happiness can help the body heal as well as help reduce depression, anxiety and even help people with dementia.
