The Omaha City Council voted Tuesday to pay the $239,670 hospital bill for a man accused of shooting an Omaha Police Gang Unit officer.

John Ezell Jr is accused of shooting Officer Ken Fortune on September 11 this year.

Officials say officers with the gang unit were conducting a traffic stop when the shots were fired.

Ezell spent more than a month in the hospital.

The City Council voted 6-1 to pay Ezell's hospital bills. Council member Vinny Palermo voted against.

The City Council agenda sites a similar incident from 1988 where the city paid a person's hospital bill.

    The agenda reads,

The City of Omaha has been found obligated to make payment for the necessary medical treatment rendered to patients of this type who were in police custody at the time of the necessary medical treatment was rendered.
