Flood leaves behind mess in Elkhorn

OMAHA, Ne (FOX42KPTM) - At first glance, it would have been easy to mistake the gushing water near 216th and Maple Tuesday morning as that of the Missouri River. It was not, however, the Missouri River.

"We've got a lot of work to do," said Joe Noah, a worker at a nearby nursery.

The rushing water was actually a creek in Elkhorn. It spilled over onto roads and caused quite the mess. Mud is now everywhere and there was no shortage of tree branches to clear.

"I've never actually seen it this bad."

Noah told FOX 42 News it was the perfect storm around 8:00 A.M. Combine pouring rain with tree branches acting as a drain stopper and you get raging rapids.

"It's going to take a lot of time to clean up."

It may be a while before the work is finished, too. With more rain chances in the forecast, there could be more debris to clear.

"It'll probably look crazy like this for at least the next day or so."

The nursery wasn't the only place that got flooded. Police in Omaha also had to shut down part of the road next to it. Even after the rain stopped, floodwaters were surging. That was something a lot of neighbors felt.

"When you get that much water coming down and all of that debris it just kind of plugs up."

Neighbors told FOX 42 News it took less than one hour for the flooding to take over their community. As for the nursery, workers say some of the plants might have to be replaced.
