First Phase Of Free Wi-Fi Network Launches In Council Bluffs

Free Wi-Fi is coming to homes in Council Bluffs.

That's the good news, but the bad news is it's going to take around five years for some of them to get it.

Some people in Council Bluffs are already on the network and they say it's a game changer.

Chandi Powell-Reade said, "We now have Internet outside, this is amazing."

It's something Powell-Reade never thought she'd have...access to free Wi-Fi.

The 11-year-old says her family can't afford Internet access, which meant she couldn't do her schoolwork outside or inside her home.

Powell-Reade said, "I usually had to go to either the school, stay after school, or I had to go to one of my mom's friend's house."

But with the launch of Council Bluffs' community Wi-Fi, BLink, Powell-Reade no longer has to do this.

She's not the only one benefiting from it.

People at Bloom Works Floral are some of the first people able to access BLink. They say that before getting this network their Wi-Fi connection wasn't as strong and it made things difficult for them. They're hoping that with BLink they'll be able to do business faster and make things easier for their customers.

Owner Alisa Roth said, "I have clients that come in and use it when I'm doing bridal consultations, so I think that'll be a big help and a major convenience for us in here."

People at Barley's Bar & Grill are also excited about the new Wi-Fi.

Bartender Cody Hytrek said, "More people can use it during game day, look up stuff, so it's not all jammed up anymore."

BLink may not be the first outdoor Wi-Fi in Council Bluffs, but city officials say it will be one of the largest in the country.

City officials say that over the next five years BLink's coverage will expand to include almost every Council Bluffs neighborhood.

The second phase of the project will be completed by the end of this year.
