Officer shot during traffic stop has been released from hospital
OMAHA, Neb. (FOX 42 KPTM) —
UPDATE: Officer Fortune has been released from the hospital.
A 'help an officer' call has been given in the area of 30th and Laurel.
Officers on scene told media that officers with the gang unit were conducting a traffic stop when one of the officers was shot. He was later identified by Omaha police as Ken Fortune. He has been with the Omaha Police Department for nearly 11 years.
Police say the passenger of the car shot at the officers.
They say officers returned fire, hitting the passenger.
Police says Officer Ken Fortune, 42, was hit by gun fire and was taken to the hospital.
They say one of the passengers in the car was also shot. Both are in stable condition.
Police say the driver was taken into custody, uninjured.
They say there were three officers in the car at the time.
Police say they aren't certain who opened fire first.
Some people have said there was a shoot out in the area.
Dispatch has confirmed two ambulances were sent to the area.
Both have taken someone to the hospital Code 3, meaning they are seriously hurt.
Police will release more information at a later time.
