Omaha firefighters collecting bikes for needy kids

The Omaha Fire Department is collecting bicycles for children who otherwise might not be able to afford one.

The department's Helmet Club puts on the Bikes for Kids event every year.

They give free bikes, helmets, food and more to dozens of kids, but that event isn't until May 18th.

For now, the crews need the bikes.

They're taking them in in any condition with the plan to fix them up.

"We can all remember when we were kids and how much joy and freedom it was to have a bike. It's just something that's special that those kids may never have an opportunity to have so we're just trying to provide them with a smile on their face," said Alex Emerson, Omaha Firefighter.

You can drop off donations at the Habitat ReStore on Emmet Street.

You can also arrange a pickup by calling 402-551-5770.

There are also updates posted on the Bikes for Kids Facebook page.
