Omaha police officer 'alert and conscious' after slipping on ice and hitting head

Omaha police say an officer slipped on ice near 132nd and Pacific Friday morning.

OPD public information officer Phillip Anson says Officer Chad Simmons had stopped to help cars that were getting stuck on an icy road.

They say he slipped, fell, and hit his head around 10:30 a.m.

Police say he was unconscious for a few minutes.

Police say it took some time for medics to get to the officer because the roads were slick.

He was taken to Bergan Mercy Hospital in serious condition.

Police say he is now doing well and is getting better.
