One of five Iowa medical cannabis dispensaries set to open in Council Bluffs

It's still all coming together, but the management at Have a Heart in Council Bluffs says it'll be ready.

"We'll open our doors, welcome the community in and give the patients the opportunity to see what's available," said Charley Wells, who designed the interior of the store.

The location on 9th Ave. in the city is just one of five dispensaries opening up in Iowa.

In order to browse the products and buy something, you need to be medically registered with Iowa, and only people with certain conditions are accepted.

The group "Iowa Patients for Medical Marijuana" fights to get medical cannabis to people it says could find relief with it, but the group says these dispensaries don't go far enough.

"It improves their quality of life as far as legal issues," said Jason Karimi, the group's executive director, "but for many of the patients, they're saying directly to us that it will not improve their quality of life with the restrictions placed on the program."

Just last year, lawmakers voted to allow restricted medical marijuana sales in the state.

Wells says if anyone goes into the shop and doesn't have a medical marijuana card, staff members will still help them.

"If they don't have that, or they're not setup in the state system, we'll be able to provide the information they'll need," said Wells.
