Robbery suspect seriously injured after cutting himself, Omaha police say

A man police say robbed two businesses earlier this month was seriously injured Monday. Police say it appears he badly cut himself.

Just after midnight on May 5, officers were called to Jalali Mart near 13th and Vinton streets to investigate an armed robbery.

Police say surveillance footage and investigation led them to issue an arrest warrant for Jess Karch, 31, three days later.

On May 14, investigators developed information that Karch was at a house near 87th Avenue and Boyd Street.

Officers from the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force arrived there and requested uniformed officers to assist.

Police say Karch had what appeared to be a large self-inflicted cut on his neck and medics took him to a local hospital.

He is currently undergoing surgery for injuries police describe as serious but not life-threatening.

On May 15, police said Karch is still recovering at the hospital and is being held under a police hospital guard.

Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked for his warrant from the Jalali Mart robbery and an additional robbery that occurred on May 9 at Ed’s Rexall Drug near 10th and Bancroft streets.

Because officers were present when Karch was injured, the Officer Involved Investigations Team has been called out of due caution.

The investigation is in the early stages.
