Tow truck driver charged in January crash that killed two

BELLEVUE, Neb. (FOX42KPTM) - A tow truck driver is now facing misdemeanor charges in a crash that left two people dead and a teen girl seriously hurt.

Around 3 in the morning on January 5th, Bellevue police say James Helbert crashed his tow truck into two cars pulled over on the side of U.S. 75 near the Chandler Road exit.

Khalil Jones, 19, and Shamus Dean, 47, were both killed in the crash.

Jones' two passengers —18-year-old Tyquan Petty and a 15-year-old girl — were badly hurt.

The 15-year-old is still in the hospital.

Investigators say Jones' car stalled in the turning lane. They say Dean pulled in front of Jones' Pontiac in a Chevrolet truck to help.

Investigators don't think Helbert had been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time and they also say he was not on his cellphone.

He was cited Thursday with Motor Vehicle Homicide and Careless Driving.
