OMAHA, Ne (FOX42KPTM) -- One day after the Creighton men's basketball team learned its fate in the NCAA tournament field the Bluejays' women's team had the spotlight. Players learned that they will also be heading west for the big dance.
It was an exciting night on Monday as players waited during a watch party to see if their team would be selected. When it was, there was screaming, cheering, and applause throughout the D.J. Sokol Arena.
The team earned the seventh seed in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
In a few days the team heads to Corvallis to compete against Toledo. It will be senior Lauren Works' first time competing in the tournament.
Works said, "I was like sweating and nervous the whole time, and honestly when I saw our name pop up I had no idea where we were playing or who we were playing. In all honesty all I saw was our name.”
Marissa Janning, who is also a senior, said, "Just like knowing that we've worked so hard for this moment, to see our name pop up there, and to see it as seventh seed is awesome."
Works says the team never would've made it this far without each other and that the players are “best friends off the court which I think absolutely has an effect on our on-court play and performance.”
Coach Jim Flanery said, “What they will feel this whole week in preparing and getting the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament is something that they'll remember for the rest of their lives.”
