49ers cheerleader kneels during national anthem before Thursday Night Football game
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (WJLA) — A cheerleader for the San Francisco 49ers took a knee during the national anthem Thursday in what is possibly the first case of an NFL cheerleader joining the controversial movement.
Before the team kicked off against the Oakland Raiders, an unidentified member of the 49ers' Gold Rush cheer squad knelt during the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner.
Former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been out of football since the 2016 season after he became a national figure credited with starting the movement to protest against discrimination by kneeling, sitting or making some other demonstration during the National Anthem.
During the 2018 offseason, the NFL passed a rule requiring players and team personnel to "stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem" when they are on the field.
